The New Fitness Craze: Time To Get Your Budokon!

There is nothing better than having more options when it comes to exercise.  Founded by Cameron Shayne (taught Rene Russo how to kick in the Lethal Weapon movie series),  the new fitness craze Budokon (pronounced bu-do-kon) blends elements of yoga, meditation and martial arts.  Whew!  I am still working on perfecting all of these separately!  Apparently Budokon is all the rage in Hollywood so classes should start popping up in your area soon.  Tip:  Try a Budokon  DVD  at home first, then strut your stuff at a class.  I just ordered the DVD.  It sounds like a great workout option for my upcoming week at the beach.  I'll let you know if I survived.

Here are some inspiring "lessons from the way" from Cameron Shayne's website:

Lessons from the Way

  1. Learn to attain your purpose without pressing your advantage, to walk without leaving tracks, to press without using forcing and to lead without manipulating.
  2. Learn not to know, not to hold on and not to interfere. This allows for people to naturally return to source.
  3. Learn discernment without judgment, love without attachment, compassion without pity and generosity without expectation. This allows for people to experience true goodness.
  4. Learn to be still, quiet, when to stop and when enough is enough. This allows for people to experience justice.
  5. Learn to yield and you can stay centered, to trust so that you will be trusted, to be empty so that you can be filled, to forget yourself so that you will not be forgotten and to control your cravings so that you cannot be controlled by them.
  6. Learn that loss of purpose creates confusion, confusion creates fear, fear creates anger and rage, and anger and rage have no place in the way.
  7. Learn from as many people as possible about as many things as possible. This allows one to overcome ignorance.

Do-it-Yourself Fitness Boot Camp

Boot_camp

Outdoor fitness boot camps are all the rage, but fitting these workouts into a busy schedule can still be a challenge.  How about setting up your own private boot camp?  All you need are a few free weights, the outdoors to walk/run (a hilly terrain can add to the fun), perhaps a pool, not a problem this time of the year, and a healthy amount of personal motivation.  The menacing, yet motivating, drill sergeant will be missing, but you'll have the flexibility to do it on your own time, and maybe, stick with it long enough to see results.  If you need a little direction to get started, hire a certified personal trainer to assist you during your first few workouts.  Now drop down and give me 20!!

Time to Play Bocce!

Bocce_2

Sick of shuffleboard, horseshoe and all those other games your relatives forced you to play when you were little? Badminton was my favorite.  It's time for a little Bocce!   Bocce dates all the way back to 5000 B.C. when the Egyptians played a form of Bocce Ball with rocks. The game was introduced to the US by Italian immigrants at the turn of the century.  Bocce includes nine bocci and one small ball called a pallino.  The object of the game is get as many bocci closer to the pallino than your opponents' closer bocci.  You can play bocce on the sand or grass so you can pack up a set, take it to the beach or break it out the balls after everyone is stuffed from eating barbecue.  Wondering about the caloric expenditure?   A 150 lbs person can burn up to 200 calories by playing bocce ball for one hour.  Playing bocce is also touted as a great way to improve reflexes and judgment.  I know my golfers will be glad to read this. Have you played?  Let me know.   It sounds like fun.
